How to Run a Tote Bag Painting Workshop: Plan, Price and Promote

Tote bag painting workshops are one of the easiest art events to start: materials are cheap, the result is useful, and guests post their bags online, which brings the next batch of guests. This guide covers planning, pricing and promotion, whether you run one workshop a month or one every weekend.

1. Choose your format

FormatGroup sizeLengthTypical product
Beginner adults10–252 hours5 oz tote bag
Kids’ weekend class8–151–1.5 hoursSling bag or pencil pouch
Corporate team event20–601.5–2 hours10 oz tote, optional logo
Festive special10–302 hoursToran, potli or tote
Embroidery circle6–122–3 hours10 oz tote or cushion cover

Start with one format and one design so you can learn your timing.

2. Pick a venue

Cafés, co-working spaces, school halls and society clubhouses all work. You need tables, good light, a sink nearby and space for 1.5 m of table per two guests. Many cafés host for free in exchange for food and drink orders.

3. Order materials

  • One canvas item per guest plus 10% spare. 5 oz totes work out to about ₹83 each in sets of 6.
  • Fabric paints, brushes, palettes, water cups and cardboard inserts. See the full Paint & Sip supplies checklist.
  • A sample bag painted in advance with the workshop design.

Order at least a week ahead. Online orders ship in 1–2 business days and reach most metros in 2–5 business days.

4. Price your seats

Work out your cost per seat first.

Cost itemPer guest (approx.)
Canvas tote (5 oz, set of 6)₹83
Paints, brushes, consumables₹60–120
Venue share or snacks₹100–300
Total costabout ₹250–500

Check what other hosts in your city charge, then price comfortably above your cost. For example, at ₹999 a seat with 20 guests and a ₹400 cost per seat, you earn about ₹12,000 before marketing.

5. Plan the session

  1. Welcome and a 5-minute demo of materials.
  2. Sketch with pencil, guided step by step.
  3. Base colours; dry with a hairdryer.
  4. Details and lettering.
  5. Group photo with the bags, then pack-up.

Keep designs simple for beginners: florals, mandalas, city skylines, quotes. Bring two difficulty levels so experienced painters stay engaged.

6. Promote it

  • Post a reel of the sample bag being painted, with date, venue and price.
  • Use location tags and hashtags such as #paintandsip, #totebagpainting and your city name.
  • Offer a “bring a friend” price for pairs.
  • Partner with the café or venue for a joint post.
  • After the event, repost guests’ photos and tag them. This is your best advertising.

7. Grow beyond one workshop

Once you have a routine, add kids’ classes, corporate events and festive specials (Diwali torans, Navratri potlis). Some hosts also sell finished bags or DIY kits; read building a brand on blank canvas.

Frequently asked questions

How far in advance should I order bags?

At least a week before the event; two weeks around Diwali and other festivals, when couriers are busier.

Can you print our workshop logo on the bags?

No, our bags come plain. Many hosts get their logo screen printed locally, or let guests stamp it on with a block or stencil as part of the session.

What if a guest makes a mistake?

Keep 10% spare bags. Small mistakes can also be covered with a darker colour or turned into part of the design.
