Beginner’s Guide to Starting a Paint and Sip Business in India
Paint and sip evenings have spread from metro cafés to smaller cities, and they are one of the easiest creative businesses to start: you need a space, simple supplies, a confident host and a way to fill seats. This guide walks through the format, costs, pricing and promotion, using real supply prices so you can plan your first session.
Choose your format
- Public sessions at a café or studio, sold seat by seat. Good for building a following.
- Private parties for birthdays, bachelorettes and kitty groups. Higher price per head, guaranteed numbers.
- Corporate sessions for team-building. Larger groups, invoiced in advance.
- Kids’ sessions on weekends and in holidays. Smaller surfaces, shorter sessions.
Canvas boards or canvas bags?
Many hosts are moving from stretched canvas boards to canvas bags and pouches, because guests take home something they will use every day, and bags are easier to carry home after a party. A 5 oz beige tote in a set of 6 costs ₹499, about ₹83 a bag, and the 10% automatic bulk discount applies when your cart has 4 or more products. For children or quick sessions, coin pouches and pencil pouches come in packs of 6.
What goes into the cost per guest
| Item | How to estimate |
|---|---|
| Canvas surface | From about ₹83 per guest for a 5 oz tote |
| Paints, brushes, palettes | Fabric or acrylic paint shared between 2 to 3 guests; brushes and palettes are reused |
| Aprons, table covers, water cups | One-time purchase, reused every session |
| Venue | Free at a partner café that earns from food and drinks, or a fixed fee |
| Food and drinks | Included, or sold separately by the café |
| Marketing | Instagram posts, WhatsApp groups and a simple booking form |

Pricing your seats
Work out your total cost for a full session, divide by the number of seats, then add your margin and your time as the host. Offer two or three packages, such as painting only, painting with a snack, and a premium seat with a better surface such as a 10 oz tote. Ask for advance payment so no-shows do not cost you.
Running the session
- Pick one design that a beginner can finish in about two hours and paint a sample in advance.
- Set each place with a bag, a cardboard insert, brushes, a palette and a water cup.
- Teach in stages: background, main shapes, details, then names or dates.
- Leave time for photos at the end, because guests’ posts are your best advertising.
