How to Start a Canvas Bag Printing Business in India
Printed tote bags sell to schools, events, cafés, gyms and small brands across India, and you can start small: a table, a screen or a heat press, and a stock of plain bags. This guide covers how to choose a printing method, which blank bags to buy, how to price, and where to find your first customers. VantageKart supplies the plain bags only; the printing is your business.
Step 1: Pick a printing method
| Method | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Screen printing | Runs of 50+ bags with one or two colours | Each colour needs its own screen, so short runs cost more per bag |
| Heat transfer (vinyl or DTF) | Short runs, names and multi-colour logos | Needs a heat press; prints can crack if the transfer quality is poor |
| Block printing | Handmade, artisan-style products | Slower, and each block is a fixed design |
| Hand painting | Premium one-off pieces | Time per bag is high, so price it as art |

Step 2: Choose the right blank
- 5 oz canvas is light and takes ink easily. It suits event giveaways and price-sensitive orders. Our 5 oz beige set of 6 works out to about ₹83 a bag before the bulk discount.
- 10 oz canvas is thicker and holds its shape, so prints look sharper and the bag feels premium. Use it for retail and corporate orders. See the full canvas bag range.
- Black bags need opaque or discharge inks, while beige and natural take almost any colour.
- Pouches and drawstring bags let you offer matching sets. Browse plain pouches and drawstring backpacks.

Step 3: Price it properly
Add up the blank bag, ink or transfer, your time, packing and delivery, then add your margin. Quote per bag with a minimum order, and charge a one-time setup fee for screens or artwork so small orders still pay. Keep two or three price tiers (for example 25, 50 and 100 bags) so buyers can see the saving on larger orders.
Step 4: Find your first customers
- Schools and coaching centres for annual days and sports events
- Cafés, bakeries and boutiques that want branded carry bags
- Gyms, yoga studios and marathon organisers
- Wedding planners for welcome kits and return gifts
- Small businesses on Instagram that need merchandise
Print a few sample bags with local designs and post them on Instagram and WhatsApp Status. Samples sell faster than price lists.
Step 5: Keep quality consistent
- Pre-wash or iron the bag flat so the print lies evenly.
- Cure every print fully (by heat or as the ink maker recommends) before packing.
- Check each order against the approved sample before dispatch.
