How to Check Canvas Bag Quality Before You Buy in Bulk

Two canvas bags can look the same in photos and feel very different in your hand. Before you order 100 or 500 pieces, check these points on a sample.

1. Fabric weight

Canvas is graded by weight, usually in ounces per square yard (oz) or grams per square metre (GSM).

8–10 oz	Firm, holds shape	Groceries, embroidery, daily use
12 oz and above	Stiff, heavy	Heavy-duty and structured bags

2. Weave

Hold the bag up to light. A good canvas has an even, tight weave with no thin patches. Loose weave lets paint bleed through.

3. Stitching

• Seams should be straight with no skipped stitches.
• Edges inside should be folded or overlocked, not raw and fraying.
• Check the base corners; that is where cheap bags split first.

4. Handles

• Handles should be stitched with a box or cross pattern at the joint.
• Pull firmly on each handle. Nothing should crack or stretch.
• Check length: 13-inch handles go over the shoulder for most adults.

5. Size

Measure flat, without handles, and compare it with the listing. Allow about 1 cm of variation in handmade bags. See our size guide.

6. Colour and finish

• Natural and beige canvas will have small specks of cotton; that is normal.
• Dyed colours should be even, without streaks.
• Wash one sample to check shrinkage and colour fastness.

7. Zips and closures

Open and close each zip ten times. It should run smoothly and the pull should not wobble.

A simple sample test

1. Order a small pack first.
2. Paint or print one bag the way you plan to use it.
3. Wash it once.
4. Load it with 5 kg and walk with it for ten minutes.
