Children’s Day Craft Ideas: Paint-Your-Own Canvas Bags and Pouches for Kids
Children’s Day on 14 November is the one day in the school year that is meant to be about fun. A painting activity on plain canvas fits it perfectly: every child makes something, and every child takes home something they will actually use.
This guide works for a class of 30, a society event or a small group at home.
Pick the right blank for each age
| Age | Product | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| 3–5 | Coin pouch | Small surface, done in 15 minutes with sponges and hand prints |
| 6–8 | Pencil pouch | Goes straight into the school bag |
| 9–12 | Drawstring backpack | Big flat front for names and characters |
| 13+ | 5 oz tote bag | Room for detailed designs |
All of these come plain, with no print, so the child’s work is the only design on them.
Theme ideas for Children’s Day
- My dream job: a doctor’s kit, a rocket, a cricket bat, a paintbrush.
- Chacha Nehru’s rose: a single red rose with the child’s name.
- Handprint animals: fingers become a peacock’s tail or a lion’s mane.
- Kindness badges: short words like Share, Help, Smile in bright letters.
- Class mural: each child paints one square on a large tote, and the class keeps it.
Supplies for 30 children
- 30 pouches or bags, plus 3 spares
- Non-toxic fabric paints in 8 colours, poured into small cups
- Flat and round brushes, sponges and a few foam stamps
- Fabric markers for names and outlines
- Cardboard sheets to slip inside each item
- Newspaper, wet wipes and aprons or old shirts
- A string line and pegs for drying
A 45-minute class plan
- 5 minutes: names written inside, cardboard in place.
- 5 minutes: the teacher shows two simple designs.
- 25 minutes: painting. Older kids sketch with chalk first.
- 10 minutes: items go on the drying line; clean-up.
Send the items home the next day with a note: let it dry 24 hours, iron on the reverse to fix the colour, then hand wash cold. Our paint guide explains heat-setting in detail.

- Use thick paint for small children; watery paint bleeds.
