Navratri Crafts: Mirror Work on Canvas Potlis and Pouches

Navratri is nine nights of colour, music and garba, and the perfect time for mirror work. A plain canvas potli or pouch becomes a festive accessory or gift with a few mirrors and bright threads. This guide walks through a beginner-friendly mirror-work potli and ideas for garba pouches.

What you need

  • Plain potli bags, 7 × 5 inch, beige or black (₹349 for 6)
  • Or coin pouches and mobile sling pouches for garba nights
  • Small round mirrors (1–1.5 cm), and a few larger ones for the centre
  • Stranded embroidery thread in red, pink, green, yellow and white
  • Crewel needle, small hoop, scissors
  • Optional: fabric paint, beads, gota lace, tassels

Mirror-work potli, step by step

  1. Mark the layout with a chalk pencil: one big mirror in the centre, small ones in a circle around it.
  2. Hold the mirror in place with two parallel straight stitches across it, then two more across those to form a frame.
  3. Work the border with buttonhole or shisha stitch around the frame, catching the fabric each time.
  4. Repeat for every mirror.
  5. Fill the gaps with chain stitch vines, lazy daisy petals or French knots.
  6. Finish by tying off inside and pressing face-down on a towel.

If you are new to stitching, start with the basics in our embroidery guide.

No-sew version for groups

For kids or a quick workshop, paint the design instead and glue mirrors with fabric glue. Paint a bandhani-style dot pattern in bright colours on beige potlis; it echoes Gujarat’s tie-dye tradition and dries in minutes.

Garba pouch ideas

  • A mobile sling pouch with mirror work and a tassel, to keep a phone safe while dancing.
  • Coin pouches with dandiya sticks painted across the front.
  • Matching potli and pouch sets for a family or a garba group.

Selling during Navratri

Mirror-work potlis and pouches sell well at garba venues, Navratri melas and on Instagram. Start making stock in August; the season moves fast. Keep a few sample pieces for custom orders with names or group logos. See building a brand on blank canvas.

Order in time

Navratri falls in September or October. Order blanks at least 2–3 weeks ahead, and see the festival calendar for the rest of the season, including Diwali projects.

Frequently asked questions

Which colour potli is best for mirror work?

Black makes mirrors and bright threads pop; beige gives a softer, traditional look.

Will mirrors fall off when the potli is used?

Not if each mirror is held by a stitched frame and border. Glued mirrors are fine for display pieces but may loosen with heavy use.

How long does one mirror-work potli take?

About 1–2 hours for a beginner with 5–7 mirrors.
