Madhubani, Warli and Mandala Art on Canvas Bags: A Starter Guide

Indian folk art looks striking on plain canvas. The flat weave holds fine lines, and a painted tote becomes a gift people actually carry. Here is how to start with three popular styles.

What you need

  • A plain canvas tote or pouch, washed or ironed flat
  • Fabric paint or acrylic with fabric medium
  • Fine liner brushes (size 0 and 00) and a fabric marker
  • Cardboard inside the bag
  • A pencil or chalk for the first sketch

Madhubani

Madhubani comes from the Mithila region of Bihar. It uses double outlines, filled patterns and no empty space.

On a tote: draw a pair of fish, a peacock or a tree of life in the centre. Outline twice in black, then fill with red, yellow, green and blue. Add a border of small triangles or leaves.

Tip: beige canvas looks like handmade paper, which suits Madhubani well.

Warli

Warli is the tribal art of Maharashtra’s Sahyadri region. It uses simple shapes: circles, triangles and lines, traditionally in white on a mud-red background.

On a tote: paint the bag terracotta, or use a black tote, then draw dancers in a spiral with white paint. Two triangles joined at the tip make a body.

Tip: Warli is the most beginner-friendly of the three. A 30-minute design looks complete.

Mandala

Mandalas are circular, symmetrical patterns built outward from a centre point.

On a tote: mark the centre, draw 3–4 guide circles with a compass or a plate, then repeat a petal shape around each ring. Fill with dots, lines and colour.

Tip: on black canvas, white or gold mandalas stand out sharply.
