Embroidery on Canvas Bags and Pouches: A Beginner’s Guide

Hand embroidery turns a plain canvas bag into something personal that lasts for years. Cotton canvas is one of the easiest fabrics to embroider because it is firm and does not stretch. This guide covers the tools, the stitches and the mistakes to avoid.

Choosing the right blank

ProductWhy it works for embroidery
10 oz tote, 40 × 40 cmDense weave holds stitches neatly; large flat panel
Cushion cover, 16 × 16 inchOpens fully, easy to hoop, great for samplers
Potli bag, 7 × 5 inchSmall motifs and mirror work for gifts
Pencil or coin pouchQuick projects, initials and small florals

5 oz totes can also be embroidered; add a light iron-on stabiliser behind dense designs so the fabric does not pucker. Compare the two weights in 5 oz vs 10 oz canvas.

Tools you need

  • Needles: crewel or embroidery needles, size 5–7. Canvas is firm, so a sharp point matters.
  • Thread: stranded cotton; use 2–3 strands for outlines and 3–6 for fills.
  • Hoop: 6–8 inch for bags. Never leave the hoop on overnight; it marks canvas.
  • Transfer tools: water-soluble pen, chalk pencil or carbon transfer paper.
  • Small sharp scissors and a thimble if you stitch for long sessions.

Transferring your design

  1. Iron the bag flat.
  2. Trace with a water-soluble pen against a window, or use carbon paper for dark canvas.
  3. On black canvas, use a white chalk pencil or a tear-away stabiliser printed with the design.

Five beginner stitches

  1. Back stitch: outlines and lettering.
  2. Stem stitch: curved stems and vines.
  3. Satin stitch: solid petals and leaves; keep areas small on canvas.
  4. French knot: flower centres and texture.
  5. Lazy daisy: quick petals for floral bags.

Mirror work (shisha) on canvas

Mirror work is a natural fit for potlis and pouches for Navratri and weddings. Hold each mirror with a framework of straight stitches, then work a buttonhole-style border around it. Start with 1 cm mirrors on a potli bag. Read our Navratri mirror-work guide for a full project.

Finishing and care

  • Tie off on the inside and secure threads under existing stitches.
  • Iron face-down on a towel so stitches are not flattened.
  • Hand wash in cold water; do not wring.

Selling embroidered bags

Embroidered totes and potlis sell well at craft fairs and on Instagram, because buyers can see the hours of handwork. If you plan to sell, read building a brand on blank canvas.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a sewing machine to embroider canvas bags?

Yes. Hoop the front panel with a stabiliser behind it, and keep the back panel and handles clear of the needle.

Which colour canvas is best for embroidery?

Beige shows every thread colour well. Black makes white, gold and bright threads stand out.

How long does a tote embroidery take?

A simple floral motif takes 3–6 hours; a full-panel design can take several days.
