5 oz vs 10 oz Canvas Bags: Which to Buy for Painting, Printing or Embroidery

Canvas bags are sold as 5 oz, 8 oz, 10 oz or 12 oz, and the number changes almost everything: how stiff the bag is, how much paint it drinks, how neat embroidery looks and what each bag costs. Here is how to choose between the two weights we make.

What does “oz” mean on a canvas bag?

It is the weight of one square yard of the fabric. Heavier means a thicker, denser weave. To compare with GSM (grams per square metre), multiply by about 34.

Painting: which weight is easier?

Both take fabric paint well. The difference is how much paint you use and how the bag behaves while you work.

  • 5 oz absorbs paint quickly, so beginners get bright colour with fewer coats. Always put cardboard inside, because thinner canvas lets wet paint reach the back panel.
  • 10 oz stays flat on the table and keeps sharp edges on detailed work, but needs a little more paint for full coverage.

For a two-hour Paint & Sip session with first-time painters, 5 oz is the practical choice. For a commission or a product you will sell, 10 oz looks and feels more premium.

Screen printing and block printing

10 oz gives cleaner prints because the dense surface does not let ink spread into the weave. 5 oz works well for simple one-colour logos on event bags, where cost per piece matters more. See our guide to screen and block printing on canvas bags.

Embroidery

Choose 10 oz. The heavier fabric supports stitches without puckering and holds its shape in a hoop. On 5 oz, use a stabiliser behind the design if you embroider densely. Our embroidery guide covers needles, threads and stitches.

Strength and daily use

A 10 oz tote is the better shopping bag: it carries groceries without stretching and stands up on its own. A 5 oz tote is still strong for books, lunch boxes and everyday carry, and it folds into a handbag.

Frequently asked questions

Is 5 oz canvas too thin for painting?

No. It takes fabric paint well; just keep cardboard inside while painting so colour does not reach the back.

Do 10 oz bags have a zip option?

Yes. Both weights come with or without a zip.

Which is more eco-friendly?

Both are cotton and reusable. The one that gets used for years is the greener choice, which usually means 10 oz for daily shopping.
